METS-S/NETS-T
Creativity and Innovation
B. Create original works as a means of personal or group expression
Essential Questions:
How can I be sure I am making wise decision?
What steps should I take to ensure that I am making wise choices?
Objectives:
Using the website www.prezi.com students will design a prezi-tation outlining the acrynom WISE. Each prezi should be a minimum of 5 slides. There should be at least one slide for each letter describing what the letter stands for and providing examples. Students will be scored based on a teacher provided rubric. A score of 12 or better on the rubric will demonstrate acceptable knowledge of the assignment and topic.
In life we are faced with many challenging decisions. It is imperative to know how to make wise decisions that will have a positive impact on our lives rather than making rash decisions that cause us more problems than we had to begin with.
Sequence of Activities:
Anticipatory Questions/Activity:
Boys and girls I would like you to close your eyes for a minute. Now think about a time when you have had problem that you didn’t know how to solve. It may be a problem you faced in the past, or you may be facing right now. Once you have thought of your idea I am going to give you 10 minutes to write about it in your journals.
Body of Lesson Plan: Segment #1

Every day we are faced with choices. Some choices, like what do we want to eat for breakfast, or what we are going to wear to school are easy decisions we make several of those types of questions every day.
However, sometimes we are faced with a situation that we just aren’t sure what to do. Such as a bullying situation like we have been talking about the last few days.
Today we are going to watch a great movie. Possibly you have seen it. It is called Karate Kid. The character Danny Laruso, had to deal with some pretty tough situations. Let’s see what he does to resolve his conflicts.
Segment #2
(Factual information/Vocab
Includes sample feedback loop)
Making decisions is like talking a walk. We start at a particular place. Once we know where we want to go-Our goal- we realize there are several ways to get there. We choose a safe path and start walking. As long as we keep in mind Where we want to go and how we want to get there we can usually find a way to reach our goal.
If we didn’t stop and make a plan on how to get to where we needed to go, what do you think could possibly happen?
Get lost, get in trouble, end up at the wrong place.
Making a hard decision can at times seem very difficult but I am going to teach you four easy steps you can take to make the process much easier. W.I.S.E.When you are trying to make a decision I want you to remember the word wise.
W. What is the situation, and what is the best goal?
I. Ideas to think about.
S. Select the best idea and act
E. Evaluate what happened. Was what I did helpful? Would I do it again?
Let’s practice these steps by talking about a person your age who needs to decide what to do. Please listen while I describe the situation, and then we’ll talk about how to apply these steps.
Ashley’s neighbor, Mr. Jarvis, offered to pay Ashley if she would help him clean up his yard on Saturday. She said yes. But then Tyler, Ashley’s best friend, asked her to go to a soccer game with his family on Saturday. Ashley really wanted to go. She always had a lot of fun with Tyler’s family. However, Ashley had promised to help Mr. Jarvis that same Saturday.
Now let us look at each of the steps to help Ashley make the best choice.
Step One. W.
What is the situation, and what is the best goal?
The situation is that Ashley wants to go to the soccer game with Tyler but already promised Mr. Jarvis she would help him that day.
Step Two. I
Ideas to think about. (what are her options)
Go to the soccer game anyways.
Tell Mr. Jarvis she was sick and can’t make it and go with Tyler.
Reschedule Mr. Jarvis if she can help another day.
Get someone else to help Mr. Jarvis.
Let Tyler know that she already made plans to help Mr. Jarvis and that she will be happy to go another time.
Here are a couple ideas, but how can we know for sure which one is the WISE decision.
Go through your list and ask yourself these 5 question
Does this idea follow my personal and family values?
Would my family and I think it’s the right thing to do?
Does this idea follow family, school and community rules?
Does this idea show respect for myself and others?
Could this idea really work, that is, is it realistic?
If you answer Yes to a question, go on to the next one. If you answer yes than it is a possible solution.
If you answer No to a question that idea doesn’t pass the test. You should cross that idea off your list and focus on only the Yes ideas.
Which option do you think Ashley should choose based on those questions?
Let Tyler know that she already made plans to help Mr. Jarvis and that she will be happy to go another time.
Step 3. S
Choose and put your idea into action.
Look at all your Yes’s and pick the one you feel most comfortable with. You can also ask yourself, If I pick this option, this___ may happen. If you are comfortable with the possible outcome than you are on the right track.
The next step is to put it into action.
Step 4. E
Evaluate your outcome.
Did your decision receive your desired results?
If yes, than you can be sure you made a wise decision.
If Not, than you need to go back to the drawing board and find another option.
So boys and girls, next time you need to make a tough decision, you have the tools to help you make the best decision.
Remember to stop and think about…
What is the situation?
Ideas to consider
Select the best idea that fits in with your family, school, and community rules. Pick an idea that will show respect for yourself and others.
Evaluate the outcome of your decision. Did your idea end the way you hoped.
Students will be working on the internet website http://prezi.com to create a prezi-tation on the W.I.S.E. decision making process.
